Bhuj: The Pride of India
Vijay Karnik

Vijay Karnik was born on 6 November, 1939 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He belongs to the Maharashtrian Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu Community. He parents were Srinivas Karnik and Tarabai Karnik.

Vijay Karnik did his schooling from Nagpur and visited Nagpur University in Wardha to obtain his Baccalaureate in Science.

He was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 26 May 1962. He enrolled himself in the 21 NAV Course after being commissioned. In 1967, he was posted in Pune with the 6 squadrons.

During the Indo-Pakistan war, in the year of 1971, on the night of 8 December, Pakistan sent eight squadrons of Sabre jets and dropped quite 14 Napalm bombs on the Bhuj, which destroyed the Indian Air Force Airstrip. The airstrip needed repairs as the airbase had to be operational to defend the Indian territory due to the ongoing war. But, due to the lack of workers for the reconstruction of the runway, Karnik convinced 300 women from the Madhapur village nearby to help them rebuild the airstrip. The women had started working, but Pakistani jets kept bombing the airbase, Karnik instructed the ladies to hide the repaired portion of the airstrip with trash to camouflage their progress. He gave them instructions on where to cover when the Pakistani jets would bomb the airbase. The women completed the repair work within 72 hours and helped the airbase resume its operations.
